Love is a
decision and a command.
At our church, singles who intend to
receive the pastor's blessing when they marry must undergo a premarital life
study (Life of a couple Bible study). Recently, a couple I've been closely
associated with in the church is getting married in May, so I've been teaching
them about the premarital life. Teaching these two has made me think, 'It would
have been great if such studies were available before...' It's truly a
beneficial study for singles preparing for marriage.
During this time teaching these two, we
had a lecture titled ‘About love’. I asked, 'What do you think love is?' and I also
want to ask you what you think love is. When we think of love, we usually think
of tender love between a man and a woman. So many people understand love as an emotion.
They think feelings like ecstasy, excitement, longing, palpitation, and joy are
love.
However, love as described in the Bible is
not the emotion we think of. The theologian C. H. Dodd said this about love:
'Love is not primarily emotion or affection, but primarily an active will and
decision. Therefore, while emotions cannot be commanded, love can be
commanded.'
In the movie 'One Fine Spring Day,' actor Ji
Tae Yoo has a line to Young Ae Lee, 'How can love change?' No, love can change.
If we think of love as emotion, it changes twelve times a day. Then does 'love
is effort' make sense? If we think of love as emotion, making an effort doesn't
make sense. But I think love is effort. Because love is an act of will.
If love were an emotion, then Jesus'
command to love in the Bible would be incorrect... Because emotions cannot be
commanded. When you are commanded to be sad, you can’t just become sad. When
you are commanded to be happy, you can’t just become happy. Just like this,
human emotions cannot be forced. Clearly, love as described in the Bible is not
an emotion but an act of will. Just like Jesus, we need determination and
effort to love someone until the end. Try the following in your heart. 'Love is
a decision, and it is God's command.'
I hope that through your love, many souls
who have not believed will receive the precious grace to return to the Lord.
Word of the week
This is the Lenten week.
Lent is a period of 40 days before Jesus was crucified, during which we deeply
contemplate the Lord. During this time, as Jesus suffered on the cross to save
us and rose again, we hope that grace will be restored through deep meditation.
