The 2nd 2022 Special dawn prayer meetings : The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry
During the two weeks leading up to Easter 2022, we will be holding online special dawn prayer meetings. The theme is “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” (Author: John Mark Comer). The sub-title in the book is ‘We need to remove the hurriedness that leads to spiritual blindness’.
I was quite shocked while reading this book. This is because I think that in order to live as a spiritually healthy Christian, this book not only be read once but needs to be practiced and applied in our lives over and over again.
Before reading this book, there was a bit of reluctance to read it due to the title of the book. This is because the image of eliminating hurry often refers to a case of inactivity, frustration, and laziness. However, this book is not just saying that we need to live slowly. It makes us think deeply about why we are so busy living our lives without taking a break.
The world is getting faster as it becomes digitised and global. In such a world, we do not have any free time, but are becoming busier and suffering from impatience. We are all trying to live a happy life by living busy, but life has become harder and more painful. We don’t have enough time, so we have fast food for meals, change lanes to go faster, and move to a shorter line at a supermarket because we don’t want to wait in the longer queue.
What is the result of living so busy? Because of the lack of time, we cannot rest, sleep, or share love with the family. There are cases in which we cannot meditate on the Word or even worship on Sunday because we do not have much time. For Christians who have to live in the kingdom of God, it rings true when the author says that the word ‘busy, is satan itself’. The author asks, ‘How can we be molded into the character of Jesus in this hectic and distracting life? Can we live in the kingdom of God that is of love, joy, and peace?’
How about we look back on our lives while eliminating the hurriedness and learn to slow down for our spirituality for the two weeks before the Easter?
