          • After farewelling Oliver

Last Friday, there was a heavenly farewell service for Oliver. Through the letter "A Letter to Oliver" by Sister YeEun, who farewelled Oliver, it deeply moved and inspired those who attended. Oliver had a hole in his brain and a heart problem since he was a fetus. The doctor suggested not giving birth, predicting a life with significant disabilities. How heavy must their hearts have been upon hearing that? However, they expressed their faith to the doctor, saying, "We are Christians, so we cannot casually erase the life given by God." They pledged to love and raise the child to the best of their abilities, even if born with disabilities. Additionally, since Oliver could die if born naturally, they decided to undergo surgery to give birth. After listening to the sermon titled "Olive Blessing," they named the child Oliver.
Oliver was born as expected, with a large lump on his head, unable to see, and struggling to breathe, requiring respiratory support. Due to seizures, he had to receive continuous injections of morphine. Eventually, entrusting Oliver's life to God, they decided to remove the ventilator, and Oliver departed to heaven after about 20 days.
We were all moved and thankful for the couple's faith that showed reverence for the life given by God. Our world pursues human excellence, often disregarding those deemed inferior. People do not cherish the life given by God for their own pleasure and happiness. However, God values us more when we are weak. There is also a hymn called, "The more feeble I am, the more precious I am..." (Hymn 465).
Some may question why God makes humans suffer, die, and experience pain. Why does He not answer our prayers? We ask God the reason for the pain. Despite God's love for us, there is pain, sadness, and suffering on this earth. Therefore, God guides us to His eternal kingdom. In God's kingdom, we will clearly understand the pain in human lives.
We thank the couple who loved Oliver to the end, reminding us of the preciousness of life and making us realize the love flowing down from God.

            Word of the week
