          • A Miracle Greater Than Miracles

We often see that churches where gifts such as healing and deliverance appear powerfully fail to keep growing. For a time crowds gather, but in the end the leader falls or the church is shaken. Why?
Signs and wonders are grace God grants to accomplish His work, often to establish a leader’s spiritual authority. The problem comes when the leader mistakes that authority for his own ability rather than God’s.
When gifts appear powerfully, it is easy to think that whoever he touches is healed and that demons must leave at his command. But the Holy Spirit is not controlled by us, nor does He move by our commands.
When this is not accepted, a leader may resort even to manipulation to meet people’s expectations — and in the end he is corrupted and the church declines.
When I served Houston Seoul Church, there were many things that could be called signs and wonders — healings during worship, demons leaving at the word, even a long-awaited pregnancy. I believe God added authority to our work of restoring the New Testament church through House Church. Yet these came only intermittently. The church is a community where God is present, so to expect such things is good — but we must not treat only dramatic phenomena as miracles.
In fact, there are greater miracles: someone who would never believe coming to faith; someone who would never change being transformed; people who could never cooperate becoming co-workers; conflict fading in grace; devotion beyond human limits becoming a way of life. Healing and deliverance are miracles, but a dead soul coming alive and a life growing to resemble Jesus is a far greater and deeper miracle.
True signs and wonders are not phenomena that amaze people, but the work of God that transforms them.

            Word of the week
The greatest miracle is this: someone who would never believe in Jesus coming to faith, someone who seemed unchangeable being transformed, conflict fading away in grace, and devotion beyond human limits becoming a habit of life.
