For a parent there is no greater joy than watching a newborn child grow strong. When a child does not grow, parents worry themselves sick — is the child eating properly, is something wrong? — because growth is the clearest evidence of life.
Faith is the same. Living faith always grows. If the thrill of first receiving Jesus, the eagerness we once felt before the Word, has stayed exactly where it was as the years passed, we should not treat that as natural but take a hard look at ourselves.
Faith that has stopped growing never simply stays where it is; what does not grow slips backwards. We are shaken by the smallest trial, and spiritual problems large and small arrive one after another. Above all, slipping backwards means living again according to our old nature. Then we no longer see how sinful our life was before we were saved. The grace of the cross grows dull, and we lose even our sense of why the life of faith is worth keeping. That is exactly what Satan wants. But God never gives up on the children He has saved; even through trial and refining He brings us back.
How, then, can we keep growing? Faith grows where there is the will and the effort to grow. When we ask why our faith is not growing, most often it is because we stopped making any effort. Three axes must keep turning — knowing, feeling and willing: worship, house church, and Life Bible Study. When these three turn together, our faith grows steadily as whole people.
So examine what preparation and what attitude you bring to worship (The will), and work at restoring it. Keep learning the Word through Life Bible Study, filling your mind (The knowledge). And through your house church and village (The feelings), share life with the members and train yourself to live as a believer.
This week, look at which of the three has come to a stop in your life, and make a fresh resolve to take up the challenge again.
